The field of laboratory sample preparation has seen significant innovations in recent years, driven by the demand for automation, efficiency, and accuracy. Companies such as ePrep Pty Ltd, Waters Corporation, and Shimadzu have been at the forefront of these advancements, introducing new technologies that aim to simplify and expedite the preparation processes across various industries, including pharmaceuticals, food, and environmental testing. As the global chromatography market expands, driven by increasing demand for biopharmaceuticals and technological innovations, these advancements are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of laboratory processes.
Colin Jump, the CEO of ePrep Pty Ltd, recently shared insights into the company’s mission to streamline laboratory operations. ePrep was created with the vision to automate manual processes in laboratory sample preparation, particularly in the early stages of testing. The company has built a solid foundation in this field, and Jump emphasized that ePrep’s future plans include collaborating with other organizations to extend automated sample preparation throughout the entire workflow. This would encompass integration with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or gas chromatography (GC) and, ultimately, the use of mass spectrometry (MS) as a detector.
By automating more stages of the sample preparation process, ePrep aims to significantly reduce the time and human intervention needed, which in turn would boost efficiency, accuracy, and consistency in laboratory results. This vision of seamless automation aligns with the broader trend in laboratory and industrial sectors, where reducing manual labor and errors is increasingly prioritized.
In June 2024, Waters Corporation introduced the Oasis WAX/GCB and GCB/WAX PFAS Analysis Cartridges. These new cartridges were developed specifically to improve the efficiency of sample preparation for EPA 1633 testing, a standard method for detecting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water and soil samples.
Previously, the testing process required a labor-intensive two-step sample preparation procedure. With the introduction of the Oasis PFAS Analysis Cartridges, Waters Corporation has effectively simplified this process. The cartridges enable a faster and more streamlined preparation method, significantly reducing both the time and labor involved in PFAS analysis. This innovation has the potential to enhance the productivity of laboratories handling PFAS testing, particularly in the growing regulatory and environmental sectors.
Shimadzu, a global leader in analytical instrumentation, made a significant announcement in October 2023 with the release of the Nexera Prep Series Preparative Purification Liquid Chromatograph. This new series is designed to improve the extraction and purification processes, particularly in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and food industries.
The Nexera Prep Series offers enhanced capabilities for the purification of functional and impurity components and target compounds. This is crucial in industries that demand high purity levels in their products, such as pharmaceuticals. With better preparation processes, Shimadzu’s new system ensures more efficient separation, higher yield, and improved reproducibility of results.
As the demand for biopharmaceutical products, including insulin, continues to rise, the global chromatography market is experiencing robust growth. The preparative and process chromatography market is projected to expand significantly, with its size estimated at USD 11.36 billion in 2024, growing to USD 12.39 billion in 2025, and expected to reach around USD 27.16 billion by 2034. This growth is driven by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.11% between 2025 and 2034.
